Reflection – “Begin to Pray the Rosary…”

June 12, 1986 – “Dear children! Today I call you to begin to pray the Rosary with a living faith. That way I will be able to help you. You, dear children, wish to obtain graces, but you are not praying. I am not able to help you because you do not want to get started. Dear children, I am calling you to pray the Rosary and that your Rosary be an obligation which you shall fulfill with joy. That way you shall understand the reason I am with you this long. I desire to teach you to pray. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

There’s no such thing as too much prayer. Or rather, no such thing as too many rosaries.

In a world where darkness seems to increase daily, it becomes clearer and clearer that the Rosary is our most effective weapon against every Satanic attack. We are sadly at the point in our society where defending an unborn life is considered “barbaric;” the practice of chastity, the belief in two genders, or protecting young children from immoral adult content is deemed as “backwards,” “uncivilized,” or “discriminatory.” And what’s more harrowing, our society has stooped so low that those who do not follow mob rule are threatened with violence, censorship, and even in some extreme cases jail.

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. [1 Timothy 4:1]

How deep humanity has fallen! How can anyone say that prayer is not needed when looking at these most distressing of times?

In this month of May—which the Church dedicates to the Blessed Mother—we have a perfect opportunity to begin the Roses of Prayer, the Holy Rosary; a most powerful weapon against the darkness that threatens families, countries, and the Church worldwide.

In her book, My Heart Will Triumph, Medjugorje visionary Mirjana Soldo recounts the dark times the region suffered due to Communism, and also an important message from Our Lady:

Earlier that year, on March 18, 1991, Our Lady may have hinted at the struggles that awaited us when she appeared at 7:30 pm for my annual apparition. I was in Medjugorje and many people were present.

During the apparition, she gave me a message to share with the world. She asked us to pray so that we “might be able to spread peace and love to others, because that is now most necessary for you in this time of battle with Satan.” She also added, “Only by means of prayer will you drive off Satan and all the evil that goes along with him.

(Mirjana Soldo, My Heart Will Triumph, p.234)

The words of Our Lady to Mirjana in 1991 are still relevant today. We are most certainly in the midst of a great battle between darkness and light, good and evil; Christ and Anti-Christ.

Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. [Ephesians 6:11-13]

Our struggle is not with human-persons, but with the demonic forces that seduce and deceive individuals into submitting to acts that both destroy them and others. We must not forget that those who offend us are also created in the likeness of God, and possess a precious and irreplaceable soul as well. They, too, are in need of love and prayer just as much as anyone else. And the prayer of the Rosary can also assist us in the practice of love, mercy and forgiveness, too.

Our Lady said:

In this peaceless world full of threats, your hands, apostles of my love, should be extended in prayer and mercy. And to me, my children, give the gift of the rosary, the roses which I love so much. My roses are your prayers pronounced with the heart and not only recited with the lips. My roses are your acts of prayer, faith and love. When my Son was little, he said to me that my children would be numerous and that they would bring me many roses. I did not comprehend Him. Now I know that you are those children who are bringing me roses when, above all, you love my Son, when you pray with the heart, when you help the poorest. Those are my roses. That is the faith which makes everything in life be done through love, not knowing arrogance, and always ready to forgive; never judging, always striving to understand one’s brother. Therefore, apostles of my love, pray for those who do not know how to love, for those who do not love you, for those who have done evil to you, for those who have not come to know the love of my Son. My children, I ask this of you because, remember, to pray means to love and to forgive. (12/02/17)

Through our recitation of the Rosary, the Blessed Mother will obtain for us the grace and strength to withstand the myriad of flaming arrows, and to live the words of Jesus on love and mercy. Through the Rosary, Our Lady will bring souls back to Jesus!

In our modern time, Fulton Sheen was a great champion of the Rosary. He loved Our Lady very much, and understood her significant role in God’s plan of salvation. Much of what he’d said was quite prophetic, and remains relevant today. He said:

It may be worth inquiring, however, why Almighty God in His providential dealings with the universe should see fit in this day to give us a revelation of His Blessed Mother in order to bring us back to prayer and penance.

One reason immediately comes to mind. Since the world has lost Christ, it may be that through Mary it will recover Him. When Our Blessed Lord was lost at the age of twelve, it was the Blessed Mother who found Him. Now that He has been lost again, it may be through Mary that the world will recover Christ their Savior. Another reason is that Divine Providence has committed to a woman the power of overcoming evil. In that first dread day when evil was introduced into the world, God spoke to the serpent in the Garden of Eden and said, I shall put enmity between thee and the woman; between thy seed and her seed, thou shalt lie in wait for her heel” (Gen 3:15). In other words, evil shall have a progeny and a seed. Goodness, too, shall have a progeny and a seed. It will be through he power of the woman that evil will be overcome. We live now in an evil hour, for though goodness has its day, evil does have its hour. Our Blessed Lord said that much the night that Judas came into the garden: “This is your hour, the power of darkness” (Lk 22:53). All evil can do in that hour is to put out the lights of the world; but it can do that. If then we live in an evil hour, how shall we overcome the spirit of Satan except by the power of that Woman to whom Almighty God has given mandate to crush the head of the serpent?

(Fulton Sheen, Life Is Worth Living, p.206-207)

The Lord has sent the Blessed Mother among us to bring us back to Him. And she is teaching us to way to draw closer to His heart each day through the power of the Rosary.

April 25, 2001 – “…Little children, prayer works miracles. When you are tired and sick and you do not know the meaning of your life, take the Rosary and pray; pray until prayer becomes for you a joyful meeting with your Savior. I am with you, little children, and I intercede and pray for you…”

January 25, 1991 – “…Today, like never before, I invite you to prayer. Let your prayer be a prayer for peace. Satan is strong and desires to destroy not only human life, but also nature and the planet on which you live. Therefore, dear children, pray that through prayer you can protect yourselves with God’s blessing of peace. God has sent me among you so that I may help you. If you so wish, grasp for the rosary. Even the rosary alone can work miracles in the world and in your lives. I bless you and I remain with you for as long as it is God’s will…”
